Mental Health and Crime Go Hand In Hand

A recent study questions on the dark aspect of crime about the mental health being ignored. With crimes taking place every minute, whether it is robbery, Homicides, Suicides, Rape and Terrorism, it is purely the mind game.

Is prison a mental asylum?
If not hundred percent, but to some extent. A research says that 70% of the criminals in prison have some or the other mental disorder. Mental conditions are managed with the help of Antidepressants, Antipsychotics and Sedatives like Benzodiazepines. But are the prisoners being treated with these? It is found that 7 laks of people are released every year. Among them 3, 50,000 criminals commit some or the other crime again and are reoffended.

Forensic hospitals are available where the treatment can be taken place and the criminals come out as citizens who abide by law.

Improve mental well being
Crime is considered as a ‘’National Public Health Crisis’’ because it is the society that is being a victim. Certain personality disorders like Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorders, Obsessive Compulsive disorders (OCD) are among the top reasons for crime today.

Substance abuse like Cocaine, marijuana, tobacco and alcohol consumption is another leading cause for crimes. Strong legal actions are already taken for such crimes.

Mental disorders v/s Crime
People who are depressed and anxious try committing suicide which is also another kind of crime. We see that most of the times crimes like ragging, rape and sexual abuse take place under the influence of drugs and sedatives.

The bottom-line is the fact that criminals need mental care and counseling on the first hand to provide criminal justice.

Evidences of school going teenagers compelled for murders are also seen all because of psychological tendencies and Peer pressures.

So it is very important that mental health care is utmost important to reduce crimes in every corner of the country.
