My Mom Has Diabetes, Can I Get It As Well?

Type 2 Diabetes is common in later years i.e. past 40 which accounts to 90% cases. Rest 10% is Type 1 Diabetes. The occurrence of Diabetes is believed to be genetic which means chances of getting Diabetes is more if a close relative of yours has. We always say ‘’Mummy/Papa has so I may have’’. This statement is true to some extent.

Two things what are important are:
  • Who is the family member having Diabetes
  • When did he/she develop the disease
Here are the facts and figures about inheriting Type 1 Diabetes from someone in your family.
  • If it is Brother, Sister , Son , daughter then there are 1 in 100 or 1 in 10 of your chances to get the ailment
  • If the first child has Diabetes  then possibility for the next sibling to have is 1 in 10 cases
  • If father has Type 1 Diabetes there are more chances i.e. 1 in 10 for child to have than mother having
  • Some people have Type 1 Diabetes along with other malfunctioning like Thyroid problem, Auto Immune disorders and disorders of Adrenal glands that combine as a syndrome.
  • If any parent developed the metabolic disorder at younger age then the chances of offspring having the same is doubled than having it after 50 years. The incidence is 1 child among 7.
  • Keeping all these things apart, if ideal diet care, Exercise and Lifestyle regimen is followed then the genetic tendency can still be negated. So for complete Diabetes care and healthy eating habits talk to a Dietician and take a Diabetic consultation right now.
