It is estimated that nearly 3.1% of deaths due to cataract, glaucoma,
trachoma early diagnosis helps in early detection of the disease and early
cure, so let’s have an eye check up.
Eye fundus
is an inner lining of the back of the eye
What is funduscopy?
An instrument, called an ophthalmoscope, is
used to examine eye fundus mainly to examine the eye to evaluate and detect
- The retinal detachment
- Retinal degeneration
- Health of the blood vessels in eye which helps in detecting the health of blood vessels overall body.
- Glaucoma and inflammation.
3 methods of funduscopy
Indirect funduscopy
- Patient is told to sit in a dark room on a chair in a reclining position
- Doctor wears a head band which is having a light to focus on eye
- This method allows 3-Dimensional viewing and presents a much wider view of the fundus
- Helps to examine the peripheries of the retina to detect things like small holes, which may cause retinal detachment.
Slit lamp funduscopy
- A bright light is focused in front of eye
- A microscope is used to look at the back of the eye.
- Patient is asked to look at different directions.
Upright funduscopy
- In this about 15 times magnification Is done for proper evaluation
- Anesthetic drops are placed in the eye in order to help dilate the pupil. Once this is done, the doctor will carry out the procedure in the same way as if he were performing a direct fundoscopy.
Complications
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dry mouth
- Narrow angle Glaucoma
- Fainting
