Fight against gum disease to prevent tooth loss

Most of the populations worldwide are suffering from some form of gum disease. Periodontal diseases could be simple gum disease in worst they can damage soft tissue and bone which support teeth.

 What is Periodontitis?
Periodontitis is inflammation of gum and bone support surrounding the teeth. It forms pockets and spaces between tooth and gum. It may worsen and cause loss of tooth.

Early detection of periodontal disease is a challenge as it does not cause any pain and may progress unnoticed. In its early stages, bleeding gums during tooth brushing may be the only sign. With the progression of disease, bleeding may stop and there may be no further obvious sign until the teeth start to feel loose.

What happens if gum disease left untreated?
Besides tooth loss new medical study revealed periodontitis may trigger cardiopulmonary disease, rheumatoid disease, COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders) as well as it leads to risk for Alzheimer’s. Bacteria in gum disease spread through blood circulation causing above disease.
Based on statistics found by World Health Organizations, more than 60% adults suffering from gum disease and It is spreading in such manner so Researchers are more keen to find preventing ways to stop spreading bacteria in the gums. Study is being designed by Eleven European researchers from nine countries through one project called TRIGGER. The goal of the study is to find the connection between periodontitis and other inflammatory diseases and to maintain oral hygiene to improve dental health.

Know the mechanism of gingivitis leading to periodontitis

Gingivitis is the inflammation of gums of the neck at the teeth. It can to lead to develop periodontitis in future.Porphyromonas Gingivalis is the bacteria causing gingivitis. The research is aimed for find active compound against these bacteria.

Porphyromonas Gingivalis, the bacteria in the oral cavity destroys the gum connective tissue by stimulating protein degrading enzyme before release it into oral cavity. Special enzyme, the bacterial glutaminyl cyclase which is occupied with protein maturation. It is playing crucial role leading to inflammatory conditions such as Rheumatoid arthritis, COPD and Alzheimer’s. The team of research is finding the compounds which lessen the enzyme’s action.

The study team could sort few substances which hamper the growth of bacteria. So not just good oral hygiene is enough, but we have to find additional measures to improve health and prevent from other inflammatory diseases.
